This seminar examines several ways in which linguists have sought inspiration from biology, from the beginning of linguistics to the present. After exploring Eric Lenneberg’s 1967 classic, Biological Foundations of Language, we will consider linguistic evolution at three very different time levels: a) biologically informed attempts to reconstruct the origins of human language, and to show why this matters to linguistic theory; b) emerging collaborations between geneticists and linguists (along with archeologists and paleo-biologists and -climatologists) in establishing deep demographic and linguistic relationships; and c) how biologists’ ideas about evolutionary processes have been adapted to historical and socio-linguistics. Additional sessions will compare folk-biological with scientific thought, and compare the macro-evolution of the older discipline biology (from Linnaeus through Darwin to the present) with the macro-evolution of the younger field linguistics.
