Whether you are a talking to a patient, teaching in a classroom, designing a museum exhibit, or simply talking with friends, communicating science can be a challenge. How can you convey complex ideas, create memorable learning experiences, or look past blind spots that experts often have in understanding what their audience knows? This course is designed to explore how we can effectively communicate science and engage in science outreach in our professional and personal lives.

Class time is primarily devoted to workshop activities developed to help science professionals learn how to communicate. Students also develop their own outreach and education activities. Projects include creating a poster to communicate the research of a UM scientist, master and perform a demonstration activity in the Museum of Natural History, develop a novel activity for Ann Arbor’s Elementary School Science Olympiad program, and develop a novel activity for the new Biology Demonstration Labs in the under-construction Museum of Nature and Science.

Grades are determined by class participation and developing and revising effective outreach projects.
