Just how bad were the Middle Ages for women anyway? This course explores the history of women and gender relations in medieval European society and culture from roughly 500 to 1500, a period that includes the rise of Germanic successor states to the Roman Empire, the rise of serfdom, development of the medieval Church, the Crusades, and the revival of urban life. Women were not simply passive victims or idle by-standers in the events of the period, but participants, resisters, and critics. Through lectures, class discussions, and primary and secondary readings, we will look at how the gender systems of medieval Europe developed and shaped women’s lives; what possibilities were open to medieval women and how they responded to them; consider the importance of gender to the ways in which medieval women thought and wrote about their own lives and the issues of the day; and investigate how gender intersected with status, religious identity, age, sexuality, or marital status.

Course Requirements:

Assignments will include two short papers, a term paper, and a final exam.

3 hours weekly in lecture format
