The course surveys Beethoven's music in biographical and historical context. Emphasis will be placed on finished works rather than sketches and "compositional genesis."

Course Requirements:

There will be weekly listening and reading assignments (the latter in Lewis Lockwood, Beethoven: The Music and the Life), an analytical paper on a work not examined in lectures, and a final examination.

Intended Audience:

Students are expected to have completed the undergraduate core in music history and theory or the equivalent.
