More than a hundred years after his death, Richard Wagner remains a thorny, much disputed subject in the history of opera and, more generally, of western modernity. This course addresses Wagner's problematic status today through a variety of perspectives: hermeneutic, historical, aesthetic, theatrical and philosophical. A selection of works by the composer will be addressed in detail, including Der fliegenden Hollander, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isole, and Der Ring des Nibelung. The complex afterlife of these works will also be traced in selected literary and filmic texts.
