With permission of department.
Enforced Prerequisites:
COREQUISITE: PHYSICS 141 (LAB).
Advisory Prerequisites:
MATH 115, 120, 185 or 295.
BS:
This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
Repeatability:
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:

PHYSICS 140 offers an introduction to classical mechanics, the physics of motion. Topics include: vectors, linear motion, projectiles, relative velocity and acceleration, circular motion, Newton's laws, particle dynamics, work and energy, linear momentum, torque, angular momentum, gravitation, planetary motion, fluid statics and dynamics, simple harmonic motion, waves and sound.

PHYSICS 140 students should elect PHYSICS 141 (lab).

Course Requirements:

Student performance is evaluated using a combination of homework assignments, class participation, three evening examinations and a final examination (see "View all Sections" for dates and times).

Intended Audience:

PHYSICS 140 is the first of a three-term sequence in general physics consisting of PHYSICS 140, 240 and 340. This sequence is primarily for students in the physical sciences and engineering. Life science and pre-health students are encouraged to take PHYSICS 135 and 235. Students with a strong interest in physics and a solid preparation in high school physics may wish to consider PHYSICS 160 and 260.
