Este curso presenta una introducción a la poesía latinoamericana desde el fin del siglo XIX hasta el fin del siglo XX. Junto con una lectura de algunos de los poetas más representativos de la tradición poética latinoamericana, intentaremos entender por qué estos escritores eligieron escribir poesía en vez de otro género—es decir ¿qué tiene de específico la poesía y cómo se utiliza para representar la experiencia moderna latinoamericana? Algunos puntos de enfoque serán: la relación entre la naturaleza y la modernidad (tanto la modernidad urbana y tecnológica como la modernidad política-cultural de un continente nuevamente independiente); los modos en que la poesía pretende mediar entre la naturaleza y la modernidad; la relación entre la materialidad y el ideal, especialmente la relación entre la materialidad de la vida latinoamericana y los ideales heredados de Europa; la relación entre el saber y el no saber (luz y oscuridad) y la idea que la poesía representa un tipo de saber alternativo.
