Intersectionality seems to be saddled with our expectations that it should do everything. As a concept, it has been foundational to feminist thought — particularly in women of color feminist theories. However, its utterance is so ubiquitous that it is often maligned as useless or taken for granted (i.e. that everyone already “does” intersectionality). Amidst its increasing presence in popular culture and a cacophony of scholarly critiques, what are the uses of intersectionality in pedagogy, in scholarly work, and outside of academia? This seminar will address these questions in three major units: Theory and Origins; Critiques and Challenges; and Application and Praxis.
