What is the good in buying organic milk, a (PRODUCT)RED iPhone case, or a sweatshirt with a “Made in USA” label? Should people try to effect social, economic, and environmental change through their purchasing habits? How should businesses respond to critiques of their products and practices? What is the role of the state in regulating and certifying those products and practices? In this course, we will examine “ethical consumerism” by tracing its antecedents and placing them in context. We will study the ways in which labor rights activists, environmentalists, and critics of the global trade economy have shaped both the kinds of goods we make and purchase as well as our ideas of what make goods good. We will ask: how do ideas of “goodness” affect the things that we make and buy, give and take, keep as treasure and toss out as trash? To address this question, we will investigate the moral claims that were central in foundational debates of what the economy is. Readings for this course provide students with a grounding in classic theories of political economy, including those of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and Max Weber. We also examine recent scholarship in anthropology, history, sociology, religious studies, and related disciplines that delves into questions of ethics and morality as they both intersect with and are embedded in economic life
