One of a series of three academic courses that casts a broad net to explore a variety of creative expressions from those collected by museums to those uncollected and taken for granted as objects of everyday life. This course uses a case study approach to focusing on societies and the influence of societies on creators and creative work through time and across world cultures. :

All readings are available through CTools with the exception of two books Persepolis 2 by Matjane Satrapi is available for our class at Vault of Midnight. It is required that you get your book here — for all sorts of reasons. The main reason is to get you to one of the most visually and culturally interesting stores anywhere. Another is to support local business, another is to get you to a part of the big bad city you may not have been to, and finally, we get a 20% discount and no tax. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THESE BOOKS ON AMAZON!!!!

Ways of Seeing by John Berger, is available for purchase (and then, of course, to read) at Shaman Drum Books on State Street (upstairs in their academic text section.)

Class Format:

Discussion sections are each facilitated by a member of the teaching time devoted to your group for the entire meeting. Each session will be led by two of you and a paper you write based on readings. The mechanics ofhow all this works will be explained next week.
