Primary Instructor:

This is a beginner's course in Chinese calligraphy. It teaches students how to produce Chinese calligraphy through hands-on practice in class. Five basic writing scripts are introduced: Seal, Clerical, Regular, Semi-cursive, and Cursive. In addition, students learn about the history, development, aesthetics, and appreciation of Chinese calligraphy. This course also includes the origin and history of Chinese characters. Through taking this course, students improve their handwriting in Chinese characters, and they master introductory-level Chinese characters.

At the end of this semester, students will be able to master the basic skills in Chinese brush writing; be familiar with the history of Chinese characters and the development in Chinese calligraphy; figure out 5 calligraphy scripts and have some knowledge about famous Chinese calligraphers; and master around 400 Chinese Characters. This course will enhance students’ writing ability in basic Chinese radicals and Characters.

Course Requirements:

Students will be evaluated by attendance, participation, vocabulary quiz, weekly handwriting homework, and term exhibition and report.
