Primary Instructor:

ASIANLAN 136 is the second half of first year Korean and builds upon the foundations established in ASIANLAN 135. Students develop key competencies in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with emphasis on speaking and listening, and learn to navigate different tenses and various speech styles. Korean-only recitations adopt a communicative approach and integrate culture-rich content.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Command vocabulary of approximately 1,000 words and expressions, and understand major grammar patterns
  • Handle most basic social situations by making conversation with both seniors and peers on topics of varying formality, including important events such as birthday, tests and extensions, dormitory life, going to the movies, shopping and prices of goods, and restaurants and food
  • Perform everyday tasks in Korean, including making phone calls, making appointments and reservations, informing and inquiring about destinations in a taxi, asking about prices, expressing frequency, ordering food and making recommendations
  • Write short compositions on classes and campus life, friends and family, and hobbies and interests
  • Use different speech styles (polite formal, informal, and intimate) in appropriate contexts
  • Talk about oneself in the past, present, and future tenses

Course Requirements:

Grading is based on class attendance and active participation, assignments and projects, quizzes and lesson tests, and final oral and written examinations.
