This course will introduce you to the cellular and molecular mechanisms that allow nervous systems to generate signals, and how these signals are used. Among the topics that will be covered are how information in the environment is transformed into electrical signals, how axons rapidly carry electrical information over long distances, how neurons communicate with each other at synapses, how the nervous system develops and how the brain’s synaptic networks extract useful information to give rise to conscious perceptions and to movements.

The textbook does an excellent job of explaining current concepts. A major focus of the lectures and discussion sections will be to help you understand the experiments that led to the development of our current views.

Course Requirements:

80% of the grade will be based on the lecture. It will be based on 4 exams, and approximately 10 short in class quizzes.

20% of the grade will be based on the the discussion. It will be based on 5 short written assignments, and on participation in the discussions.

Intended Audience:

Sophomore and Junior Neuroscience majors and other life science majors

Class Format:

3 hours of lecture and 1 hour of discussion
