Primary Instructor:

This is primarily a film course that includes some readings of literature and film theory. Our main subject will be the worlds that differ from our own: utopian, dystopian, as well as purely fantastic.

We will focus on how the text, meaning, and our desires get “translated” across various media and genres; whether what we read and watch is really the product of the artists’ imagination, or whether the meaning, ideas, settings, etc, are in fact merely a version of what we already know. How do we perform this ultimate translation of humanity’s constant yearning for a different, better world into a text or a film, can we even envision worlds and a life radically different from the one the humanity has always lived?

Primary material may include Handmaiden’s Tale, Blade Runner, Brazil, Children of Men, 1984, Her.
