Our course will look about the American notion of going into the wilderness. From the New England Puritans, to Virginia planters, to Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Nature (1836), to Herman Melville’s Typee (1846), to Henry David Thoreau’s Walden(1854), to Jack London’s Call of the Wild (1903), we will explore how Americans have written about venturing into unfamiliar landscapes and seas. We will look at how the early colonial mission into the woods became manifest destiny and westward exploration. Beyond our books, we will be watching film, Terrence Malick’s The New World (2005) and Robert Eggers’ The Witch (2016). Each student is expected to do weekly journal posts, a short paper (five pages) and a longer paper (ten pages).
