Are you more than the sum of your Googled parts? What do you see when you look into the mirror of social media? Are you the master of your machines, or could it be the other way round? Over the course of the semester, we will explore these questions and more together using contemporary novels, short fiction, creative nonfiction and critical analysis essays, and, potentially, visual media such as artwork and film. Our aim will be to enter into larger, ongoing conversations with artists and critics, interrogating what it means to be human in a technology-driven world that seems to preference speed, access and quantity of information above all else. Good writing begins with a question or theory, creating a dynamic quality, a search for the truth. In this class, students will be challenged to pursue questions that matter to them, to sharpen their critical reading and thinking skills as they add their voice to the broader conversation about technology, art and what it means to be human. Working closely with their peers in a workshop environment, students will draft and revise essays, gaining insight as their writing evolves into how to effectively appeal to an audience, refine and explore main ideas, and shape an essay. Writing is revising, as our work together will emphasize. In the process of reading and commenting on drafts-in-progress, students will learn to recognize the potential in a draft and communicate specific suggestions to help a draft realize its full potential. In this way, over the course of the term, students will work collaboratively and gain important insight into how to create nuanced, complex and compelling arguments in an academic environment. Specifically, we will focus upon macro-level concerns such as developing and refining an arguable, relevant thesis; handling evidence effectively; incorporating counterarguments; integrating outside scholarship; and writing appealing introductions and conclusions. On the sentence level, students will work on elements such as sentence variety, transitions, tone, voice and, of course, how to write a clean line of prose. By the end of the semester, after writing and revising four essays and working on a variety of writing exercises, students will have gained important writing and critical thinking skills that will better prepare them to enter into academic discourse with confidence, style and flourish.
