What’s happening when we read something that moves us? What does it mean to have a creative process? Does a writer age by the year or through creation? Together we’ll consider these questions and more as we, as Stephen King advises young writers, “read a lot and write a lot” together. In studying craft we’ll examine the seductive writer’s singular instincts that manifest in the work as form, theme, plot, character, movement, tempo, voice, style, etc. Discussing other people’s writing in this way will, I hope, prime you to produce an intentional and inviting portfolio of your own. Students should expect to: produce new, original work; revise their work; experiment with form and genre; and thoughtfully engage with peer writing.
