This section of 225 will be focused on the theme of “Science and Society.” Through weekly readings and discussions, we will be interrogating questions such as: What constitutes science in our society? What is the relationship between the sciences and other disciplines? What kinds of questions can/cannot be answered through science? How is science communicated or perhaps miscommunicated to the public? How is public trust formed when it comes to taking action as a result of scientific evidence? What is or should be the relationship between science and narrative? Inevitably, such lines of inquiry will lead us to think about the role that audience plays in shaping written communication. We will be reading arguments about the role of science in society, reading popular authors critiquing the encroachment of science into traditionally humanistic areas of inquiry, as well as scientists making the case for expansion of scientific inquiry into new fields.
