This section of English 225 is about building ethical arguments. We’ll study a variety of contemporary ethical dilemmas, analyzing the arguments of others and forming our own responses. Along the way, we’ll also explore some of the enduring questions of skepticism and relativism. For example, are there really such things as right and wrong, good and evil? Is everyone simply entitled to his or her own opinion, end of story? Do moral standards vary from place to place, culture to culture? But the emphasis in this class isn’t on studying the history of ethics; instead, this class is about performing ethics through the employment of critical thinking, writing, and research skills. As the scholar Vincent Ruggiero has it, we will seek to cultivate habits of mind that allow us to “break the bonds of indecision, move beyond fad and foolishness, and address the dilemmas of modern living sensitively and sensibly, with regard for their complexity.”
