Primary Instructor:

FRENCH 113 is an accelerated one-semester course that is primarily designed for graduate students who need to acquire reading proficiency in French in order to be able to read articles pertaining to their areas of research. This course will not only provide students with a proficient reading knowledge of French, but will also facilitate the translation of French texts from a variety of disciplines. The principal structures of French grammar and main lexical features (for instance, verb tenses, sentence structure, idioms, and vocabulary) will be studied and analyzed systematically. We will be using English grammar terms to compare the languages.

Auditors will be accepted if they participate fully in class discussions and complete all assignments. Graduate students who have another required course or teaching duties that conflict with the class schedule are encouraged to contact the instructor.

Course Requirements:

Attendance to the first course meeting is mandatory.

Regular, mandatory class meetings will include language study and collaborative practice. Concepts will be tested regularly and cumulatively, with a focus on grammar and vocabulary, reading, and translation. Students will select some articles that relate to their areas of study for translation. Short articles (of about 200 words) will be translated as homework and this practice will culminate in the translation of a long article (10,000 words) relevant to individuals’ areas of study. Additional targeted practice of linguistic structures will help students develop their skills in reading and translation.
