GERMAN 102 is the continuation of GERMAN 101; please see the description for GERMAN 101 for a description of the general philosophy underlying this course. In addition to the textbook, the course includes a novel about an artist whose new neighbor is a communist kangaroo, and a book describing 365 things to do in and around Berlin. Students will watch a variety of video materials, including the beginning of the film Mostly Martha, the Oscar-nominated short film Ausreißer, and the first episode of Verliebt in Berlin (the German version of Ugly Betty). There are additional cultural readings in English along the lines outlined in the description for GERMAN 101.

By the end of the semester, students will have been exposed to all the essentials of German grammar, which will then be reviewed and extended in the third and fourth semesters. Students will be able to cope with a variety of conversational situations and written texts. In particular, they will have the necessary "survival skills" for a visit to a German-speaking country, as well as a basic foundation for doing intellectual work in German.

Course Requirements:

Course requirements include chapter tests and a final exam, two informal oral tests, a final role play, 4 short essays, class participation, and regular homework assignments.

Note:
1. Most of you will still have the Vorsprung ePack (looseleaf textbook + iLrn access) from German 101. If not, please go to http://www.lsa.umich.edu/german/hmr/kursinfo/102index.html for info on how to order it (it is not available from the campus bookstores or other online retailers). Please read this info carefully and then email Hartmut for more detailed instructions before making a purchase! You are NOT likely to save money by buying the book used, as you would still need to buy the iLrn access at full price. 2. Please consult with your instructor before buying any of the recommended books. You can also email hmr@umich.edu with questions. 3. The 365 Dinge... book is no longer in print, so we will be working with scans of it periodically during the semester. It's a great book to have, especially if you are considering a trip to Berlin, so we have listed it as a recommended text in case you are able to find a used copy at a reasonable price.
