This first-year seminar introduces students to the diverse histories of Native American women from the early seventeenth century through the early twentieth century. We pay considerable attention to the methods and sources of historical inquiry on Native women, discussing the challenges that often arise in this area of scholarship. The class begins by addressing questions of method: What do we know about American Indian women of the past, and how do we know it? What constitutes history in the subject area of Native women, and what constitutes myth? And to what personal, political, and ideological uses have histories and myths of Native women been put in broader American culture? Key themes will include: concepts of kinship and intimate relationships; spiritual understandings and notions of tradition; gender roles and cross-cultural gender difference; processes of colonialism, conceptions of land, and effects of land dispossession; cultural negotiation, change, and continuity; public representation and misrepresentation; and personal, familial, and tribal perseverance.
