This class will investigate the origins of modern views of sexuality. Beginning in the nineteenth century, sexual subjects started to see their sexual lives as an expression of their inner self; a science of sex emerged, sexology; writers experimented with sexual themes; activists embraced sexual as political causes; and sexual subcultures became fashionable. This heady mix of the personal, the social, and the political revolutionized the way we think (about) sex. German-speaking thought, activism, and writing forged much of this change, and this is what we will study through an in-depth discussion of texts, documents, images, and films, in part from the time before the German Discovery of Sex.
