This course examines musical creativity with an emphasis on nearby places (the United States) and recent times (the twentieth century), while highlighting the techniques, concepts, and resources of music history. The course builds on the concepts introduced in MUSICOL 139 and works to prepare students for the one-year Western music survey of MUSICOL 239–240. Most important, we explore how history enhances the creative work of musicians, learn the basic analytical skills of musicology, and along the way listen to some great music and undertake our own original research.

Course activities will help explore musical creativity in its social and historical context. Themes include cultural institutions, making a living in music, the American mavericks, and comparative stylistic analysis. An Art of Interpretation project is designed to hone your writing as well as your artistic toolkit—habits of mind (especially questioning) and skills (such as listening, critical reading, researching, writing, analyzing, interpreting, discussing, and collaborating) — in order to spark your own imagination and expressive vocabulary about music. The intent of the course is to inspire active and creative engagement with the ideas and events of the musical past as creative fuel for the art of music today.

Course Requirements:

Course assessments include a midterm and final exam and four listening quizzes.
