The college adjustment process is one of the most dramatic transitions that individuals will experience in their lifetime. This course is designed to introduce students to psychological theories and research that examines how emerging adults successfully navigate the transition from high school to college. Considering that all of the students enrolled in this first year seminar will be actively immersed in the college adjustment process, this course is intended to be highly interactive and students will be expected to introspectively compare readings with their personal experiences. This course will cover psychological theories of human development with a focus heavily on social identities to help students understand how social factors and individual difference are associated with college adjustment.

Course Requirements:

Given the small size of this seminar, students are expected to complete all of the readings before class and participate frequently in class discussions. Students will also complete a mini research project and present their findings to the class. There will be no final exam, but students will submit three papers during the course and also submit discussion questions in response to the reading each week.

All reading materials will be provided free of charge on the Canvas course website.

Class Format:

The course will involve in-class lectures and in-depth class discussions.
