There is a growing popular and academic interest on mindfulness. Mindfulness refers to non-judgmental moment-to-moment awareness. The major objective of this course is to provide a strong theoretical and empirical foundation on mindfulness using an interdisciplinary framework, including the point of view of practitioners and teachers of mindfulness. Students will learn about the philosophical foundations of various approaches to studying and cultivating mindfulness. Students will gain knowledge about the methodological challenges in measuring a seemingly simple yet elusive construct like mindfulness.

Specifically, this course will provide an overview of theoretical and methodological advances in the psychological study of mindfulness and its effectiveness in improving psychological and physical well-being. In addition, students will be exposed to effective mindfulness practices that have strong empirical research basis. This course will also have a strong experiential learning component to help students to learn about many secular everyday practices that cultivate mindfulness.

Course Requirements:

The students will do several reflection papers and a final research paper on mindfulness. There will be a midterm and final exam for the course.
