This new seminar complements the lecture course “Food Literacy for All” (Environ 305/EAS 639.038) that features prominent food-system scholars and activists in a weekly lecture series (Tuesday evenings) that is open to students, the campus community, and the wider community of southeastern Michigan. The goal of this seminar is to delve into the topics presented by the speakers, based on readings by the speaker or recommended by the speaker. We will expand our knowledge about the context for the topic presented by the speaker as well as the analysis that the speaker presents during his or her lecture. All students who enroll in this seminar must also be enrolled in “Food Literacy for All.”

Each week, we will read an article relevant to the Tuesday lecture and discuss the ideas covered in the lecture and the reading. Students are expected to be familiar with the readings and contribute actively to discussions. Each week, a team of three students will lead the discussion. Students will also write two short essays. The course will offer several opportunities to interact with our collaborating partners in Detroit (the Detroit Food Policy Council and the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network), and students are required to participate in one event in Detroit during the semester.
