This course teaches the essential skills of audiovisual analysis and argumentation with a screening list of classic films as its foundation. Students learn how to look closely at movies while recognizing different ways that cinematography, sound, editing, and mise en scène shape the meaning of a film. Topics include the language of film, cinematic storytelling, film style, authorship, genre, and the audiovisual essay.

SAC 236 teaches a forward-thinking mode of audiovisual literacy by scaffolding a series of audiovisual film analysis assignments that culminate in students creating original audiovisual essays that apply the analytical methods of the course to a specific film drawn from the screening list.
