RCSSCI 461 - Senior Seminar
Section: 001 "Women"s and Sexual Rights are Human Rights":The History of International Human Rights Law on Gender, Sexuality, and Sexual Orientation
Term: WN 2018
Subject: RC Social Sciences (RCSSCI)
Department: LSA Residential College

This course examines the development of international human rights principles regarding gender and sexual rights over the past several decades and the application of these principles in different national legal contexts. It begins by exploring the history of the notion of universal human rights in the aftermath of World War II, particularly the processes by which international human rights law has come to include specific provisions regarding gender and sexual rights. Students will prepare a mock debate on issues that arise as part of this process. The second part of the course examines the interpretation and application of international human rights principles within the Inter-American regional system, focusing again on gender and sexual rights. Finally, each student will conduct independent research and write an analytical paper on a case involving gender or sexual rights, originating anywhere in the world that was brought before an international or regional human rights body.
