Primary Instructor:

This Spanish linguistics course provides a general overview of the different Second Language Acquisition (SLA) outcomes in different learning contexts (e.g., study abroad, overseas immersion setting and traditional foreign language classroom). Although there will be an emphasis on the acquisition in Spanish in particular, other languages will be discussed as well. Students will explore how research on different learning contexts informs theories and models of SLA as well as cognitive and linguistic approaches at large. Students will learn about studies that have focused on the development of fluency and cognitive abilities and the acquisition of syntax, vocabulary, pronunciation, pragmatics, and sociolinguistic variables in different learning contexts. In addition, this course has a highly practical component as it intends to foster the development of research skills. Among the different requirements of this course students will have to write a final paper for which they will have the opportunity to analyze data from real learners from different learning contexts from a linguistic perspective. Students will be expected to connect their findings with the existing literature on different learning contexts/study abroad.

This course counts as elective credit toward the Spanish minor.
