In this course, we will study participatory processes of land stewardship in the context of local community gardens. We will look into sites where participants’ design sensibilities are an integral part of such processes, as well as those where they are not immediately apparent. Specifically, we will partner with communities — distinct in race, class, and gender — and place their narratives in conversation with a range of theoretical and historical perspectives on space, politics, and justice. As we explore these accounts, we will discuss how our partners are imagining the city for themselves, their families, and their communities, and the extent to which they are building an infrastructure to support their visions. By interconnecting academic scholarship and lived insights, we will go past the rhetoric of community gardening as a harmonious imperative, and examine how this practice might be social, but also deeply political and complex.

The course will serve as a space of reflection for students, and potentially, an opportunity for collaborating with community partners to develop and contribute spatial narratives to the Smithsonian’s “Community of Gardens” digital archive. Together, we will shape the course in ways that are mutually rewarding and intellectually stimulating. This course may require additional field trips to Detroit using a CEAL-Ride vehicle (4-5 hrs).
