Leading Feminism will explore the relationships between gender, power, influence and leadership in United States context. How do we understand power and influence? How are our understandings gendered? What is the impact on leadership opportunities for women and on the choices women make? What is the impact on organizations? How do women leaders (and aspiring women leaders) effectively navigate, communicate, manage, and lead to maximize organizational impact and personal success?

Students in the course are paired (individually or in pairs) with leaders across a variety of sectors (nonprofit, public, private, or corporate) in service-mentorship partnerships. Students are expected to dedicate 55-60 hours (about 4 hours a week) over the course of the semester to completion of an action-learning project that contributes to the service site mentors’ organization.

The course will draw upon feminist and management texts, publications from authoritative organizations, as well as current media. Students will think critically about gender and leadership, the many sectors in which feminist practice is applicable and needed, and examine how course concepts apply to their service site placements as well as their own career aspirations.

At the conclusion of this course, the engaged and active student will have gained the tools necessary to: articulate a conceptual framework for feminist leadership that is applicable and adaptable across sectors; understand and internalize the concept and practice of leadership for furthering feminist goals and for social transformation; and utilize strategies for doing feminism outside feminist circles in effective ways.

Please Note: Although not required, interested students are encouraged to consider and engage potential mentors prior to the start of the course. A list of possible mentors is also available from the instructor. All students will be required to have a committed mentor by January 24, 2017. Mentors must be in an executive-level leadership position in an organization. Organizations may be nonprofit, public, private, or corporate.
