Primary Instructor:

This section of WRITING 400 is specifically directed at graduate students working towards a degree in a natural science field. We will study research skills necessary to identify and pursue a topic of inquiry using reliable, respected sources. We will discuss the rhetorical situation of a scientific research paper, including considerations of audience and writer goals in communicating. We will cover strategies for complete and insightful peer review important to the scientific process. Students will produce a 10-page literature review, a 10-page proposal, and will complete a public speaking module geared towards translating the written research to a professional oral presentation.

Course Requirements:

Read, analyze, and evaluate scientific literature. Compose an introductory review and proposal on a research topic of your choosing. Develop in-depth peer review strategies and skills for communicating peer review. Reflect on writing process. Practice skills and organization for oral presentations.

Intended Audience:

The intended audience for this course is graduate students, especially pre-candidates, working in chemistry or a natural science field who want to practice written and oral communication. Special accommodations can be made for other interested students not engaged in experimental research.

Class Format:

Seminar-style group discussions of reading materials. Short instructor lectures. Facilitated peer feedback and in-class work time.
