Primary Instructor:

Through a combination of short lectures and classroom activities this course will expose students to the challenges that many female students in STEM majors face in their classes and in their future careers. We will aim to move beyond awareness to the development of positive strategies. In addition, students will learn the building blocks for critical thinking skills through reading assignments and classroom activities. Students will also learn how to read professional journal articles, formulate questions, and how to evaluate arguments and evidence. There will also be small group activities that focus on team work and the oral communication skills necessary to be successful in the classroom, research lab, and work place.

Course Requirements:

Assignments will include selected readings from books and articles, short writing assignments, and small group presentations. There will be a longer final paper based on an interview with a U-M faculty in an area of study that interests you.

Intended Audience:

The Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program Seminar is a required one-credit course for all first-year students enrolled in the WISE RP
