This seminar will investigate the concepts of “language” and “race” from an interdisciplinary perspective. Beginning with anthropology’s early ruminations on “race” and “language” to contemporary discourses surrounding the diversification of our profession, we will examine the various articulations of these concepts in relation to the disciplinary habits and positionality of past and present scholarship. In tandem with these discussions, we will collect and analyze data that bears on current institutional concerns with diversity, equity and inclusion at the University of Michigan and elsewhere.
