Primary Instructor:

ASIANLAN 135 is the first half of an introductory course for beginners with little or no previous knowledge of the Korean language. Through grammar lessons combined with Korean-only recitation sections, the course builds strong foundations in core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The curriculum places a special emphasis on oral communication and incorporates authentic material designed to help students develop cultural literacy in tandem with linguistic competency.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Pronounce Korean words correctly
  • Read and comprehend short one-paragraph passages
  • Command vocabulary of approximately 500 words and expressions, and understand basic grammar patterns
  • Count with Sino-Korean and native Korean numbers, and use appropriate noun counters
  • Conduct simple conversations on topics including greetings, locations of objects, classes, daily activities, likes and dislikes, and asking for and giving directions.
  • Write one-paragraph compositions on topics including the Korean class and classmates, UM campus, daily and weekend schedule, shopping, and one's hometown

Course Requirements:

Grading is based on class attendance and active participation, assignments and projects, quizzes and lesson tests, and final oral and written examinations

Intended Audience:

True beginners with little or no previous knowledge of the Korean language. Students with some background are encouraged to take the placement test to see if they qualify for ASIANLAN 138: Intensive First Year Korean
