Primary Instructor:

ASIANLAN 138 is the first half of an introductory course for those students with some knowledge of the Korean language, including heritage students, students who have experienced limited formal or informal instruction, and students who have developed some proficiency through extensive exposure to Korean popular culture. Students should know how to read Hangeul and have a command of some basic expressions. The accelerated course combines grammar lessons and content-rich activities that build strong foundations in core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The curriculum places a special emphasis on fluency of oral communication and accuracy in writing.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Read and comprehend short one-paragraph passages.
  • Command vocabulary of approximately 500 words and expressions, and understand basic grammar patterns.
  • Count with Sino-Korean and native Korean numbers, and use appropriate noun counters
  • Conduct simple conversations on topics including greetings, locations of objects, classes, daily activities, likes and dislikes, and asking for and giving directions
  • Write simple sentences on topics including the Korean class and classmates, UM campus, daily and weekend schedule, shopping, one's hometown

Course Requirements:

Grading is based on class attendance and participation, assignments and project, quizzes and lesson tests, and final oral and written examinations.

Intended Audience:

Intended audience consists of students with some limited knowledge of Korean but whose proficiency level is not high enough for ASIANLAN 136. Students should know how to read Hangeul and have a command of some basic expressions.
