This course introduces students to the exciting and interdisciplinary field of biophysics and its role in the life sciences.

DNA provides the blueprint for life as we know it. In this course, students will closely examine DNA from different angles: its structure, biological function, chemical makeup, and physical properties. Students will roughly follow a historical approach from Mendelian genetics to the discovery of the double-helical structure by Watson, Crick and Franklin, to modern epigenetics and gene therapies. Students will also have the opportunity to re-create the original experiments that led to the discovery of how DNA governs inheritance.

Course Requirements:

Presentations, quizzes, one Biophysics seminar and a term paper. Students will use quantitative approaches like scaling arguments and Bayesian statistics where appropriate.

Intended Audience:

Students interested in the natural sciences and medicine.

Class Format:

A mix of lectures, hands-on experiments, laboratory tours and student presentations.
