What do we see when we imagine the future? What does it look like? Does it look anything like today? Do we recognize in it the time that preceded it? And if what we imagine is a dystopian future, are we imaging something completely new and different, or something that is just an extension, maybe an exaggeration of the world we live in? In this course we will read two classic dystopian novels, 1984 and A Brave New World, both of which posit not only despondent and nightmarish futures but find their roots in the authors’ contemporary moments – and, perhaps, even more so in our time… To this end, we will also read a number of shorter pieces on the themes brought up by Orwell and Huxley’s dystopias. Over the course of the semester we will use all of these in conjunction with a series of articles and exercises on reading and writing to train those very skills, with the objective of improving compositional and analytical abilities.
