Primary Instructor:

In this course, international graduate students gain a greater understanding of US society and culture through an examination of salient issues being addressed by institutions and organizations at the national and local levels. Through interactions with guest speakers from local organizations, students will have an opportunity to learn first-hand how community organizations are addressing the issues covered in class. Students will improve their language skills through class discussions and skills-focused activities and interactions with invited speakers. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in a one-day community service experience.

Class Format:

NOTE: Students who take this course may want to consider ELI 561, a course in which students are placed with a local organization in order to learn more about the local community and enhance their language skills. Students enroll in the winter term for ELI 561 (2 credits) and may take it along with ELI 560.
