What do people mean when they talk about translation? Does it always concern a transfer of meanings across languages? What about when you explain what something means to a perplexed friend in your own words in the same language? Is that translation? And how about a poem composed after an eponymous painting? Can we say that the poem translates the painting? Exploring what translation “might be” rather than what it “is,” we will think critically in this class about and with translation to create complex, analytic, well-supported arguments that matter in academic courses. You will work closely with your peers and me to develop your written prose. The assigned readings will cross a variety of genres and academic disciplines, with a primary focus on literary texts that might be treated as translations.
