Norms may seem relatively harmless, the results of statistical ranges that tell us whether something is typical or more of an outlier. But what happens when norms take on a regulatory function? How do norms become a social tool for disciplining or ostracizing those who depart from what is viewed as "normal"? Who defines what is normal and what is deviant, and what social consequences follow for those who exist outside the norm? How do norms help construct hierarchies based on gender expression, sexuality, ability, race, and ethnicity? What happens when norms are challenged, subverted, deconstructed? This course explores freaks, queers, and outcasts, with particular attention to the social power structures that have labeled them as such. We will address these questions through a wide range of texts, focusing on twentieth-century literary fiction and social theory. By reading and responding to these texts, we will consider how writing can reinforce, reveal, or subvert norms, and we will hone the analytical skills necessary for developing nuanced arguments in academic contexts. Course readings may include literary works from Nella Larsen, Ralph Ellison, Alison Bechdel, James Baldwin, Willa Cather, Henry James, and theoretical writings from Michel Foucault, C.J. Pascoe, Judith Butler, Michael Warner, Jasbir Puar, and others.
