Primary Instructor:

This is an intensive study of the craft of poetry writing, exploring strategies for structure, approaches to form, tactics for controlling the poetic line, and the use of figurative language. Poets will generate work weekly and will also write three craft annotations (2-3 pages long) on the work of published poets. In the annotations, the student will explore the ways in which temporal/spatial movement operates, how the release of information happens, and how the pacing of the poem is calibrated.

Note: Students who are declared creative-writing minors or English sub-concentrators will receive alternative enrollment instructions in an email before registration begins (students who declare after registration begins should email scrivers@umich.edu). Creative-writing minors and English sub-concentrators are not required to submit a portfolio for review.

To enroll in this course, non-creative writing minors and subconcentrators need to:

  1. Submit a portfolio. Portfolio requirements vary from section to section, so contact instructors directly for their specific guidelines. Portfolios are usually between 5-15 pages of original relevant work (short stories, excerpts, poems) and should be submitted directly to the instructor of each section. For priority consideration, portfolios should be submitted no later than 5pm on Monday, March 26, 2018. Students should receive notification of their acceptance (or not) no later than Friday, April 2, 2018. Students may still submit portfolios after the priority deadline until seats are full.
  2. Students are encouraged to consider a second-choice section (where available) as a potential back-up. Please email your second instructor of choice, if you are denied your first choice.
