This iteration of German 540 will be devoted to 20th century theoretical literacy. We will read canonical texts by canonical authors because non-canonical texts of non-canonical authors are so frequently and fruitfully in dialogue with them—but those dialogues only unfold their potency if we are familiar with the former. Students should feel free to suggest their own additions to the syllabus—I want this to be a collaborative syllabus—, but we will with near certainty read Nietzsche, Freud, various Frankfurt School authors, Carl Schmitt, and Hannah Arendt.

Course Requirements:

Requirements: attendance, participation, weekly brief reaction texts, and a final paper of 15-20pp.
