Primary Instructor:

The purpose of the year-long course sequence MELANG 101-102 Elementary Classical Hebrew I & II, is to equip the beginning student with the basic tools necessary for reading the Hebrew Bible. The course will introduce the student to the grammar of biblical Hebrew: its phonology (the study of speech sounds), morphology (the study of word formation), and syntax (the study of phrase and sentence formation). In addition to mastering the basic grammar, the student will need to acquire a sizable working vocabulary of the language. Combined competency in grammar and lexicon best facilitates the goal of reading the biblical text. An accurate translation of the biblical text is the ultimate focus of the entire four-course sequence (101-102, 201-202) and regularly practiced from the start of 101 to the end of 202.

Students and instructor will complete an in-class review of each chapter of the required textbook over the course of two class sessions. Students will complete, in writing, the exercises from each chapter prior to the first class session devoted to that chapter. In the first class session, the review of the chapter’s content and exercises on biblical passages will be initiated. By the end of the second class session, the review of the chapter’s exercises will be completed, the student’s full, written work on those exercises submitted, and a quiz administered in-class covering the chapter’s vocabulary and its content.

Course Requirements:

Course requirements include regular attendance and participation, corrected daily assignments (i.e., all assigned textbook exercises), 13-14 announced vocabulary and paradigm quizzes (with one class day advance notice), and two half term exams. Course grading is based upon required daily readings (25%), attendance and quizzes (25%), as well as two major, half term examinations: a first half-semester exam (25%) and a second half-semester exam (25%). Exams are NOT cumulative; each covers a half-semester’s course content. Attendance/participation 25% Daily assignments 25% Ten best quizzes 25% Two half term Exams 25% (12.5% each)
