Primary Instructor:

This course is intended to develop the research skills as well as the methodological and theoretical perspectives that students will need in their subsequent graduate studies in musicology. It begins by surveying the development of musicology in its different national contexts, and then turns to more recent directions in both American and European musicology and ethnomusicology.

Course Requirements:

Requirements include weekly presentations and readings as well as two substantial papers, one focused on the evolution of the field itself, and the other a subject of the student's choosing, employing methodologies of techniques we have discussed.

Intended Audience:

Musicology graduate and musicology certificate students only.
