Leadership has become a buzzword around college campuses and in the greater global community, but do you know why leadership exists? Do you think leaders are born or made? What is good leadership? When and why does leadership fail? How can leaders, followers, and institutions improve the practice of leadership?

This course will examine these questions from the perspective of the social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology, economics, political science). Together, we will explore what it takes to be a leader by drawing on contemporary and classical research. To be effective, leaders must possess a clear understanding of human behavior and social processes, including the practice of collaboration. The ultimate goal of this course is not to completely transform each student into a perfect leader, but to stimulate students to think critically about human behavior and why leadership is at the core of the success of groups, organizations, and societies.

Course Requirements:

Attendance and participation in section and lecture; one in-class midterm and one final exam, both comprised of multiple choice and short answer questions; One group research project. See syllabus for more info.

Intended Audience:

Freshmen and Sophomore students interested in theories of leadership and organizations

Class Format:

1.5-hour lecture twice weekly and one-hour discussion once weekly
