The importance of an organization’s culture can be summed up by famed psychologist and management consultant Peter Drucker’s famous quote which states, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” A healthy and positive culture is absolutely critical for an organization’s success. Key questions that must be asked about culture include:

  1. What is organizational culture made up of?
  2. What makes an organization's culture “successful”?
  3. How can an organization cultivate a positive culture?

This course adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to explore various aspects of an organization’s culture, including how culture is created, transmitted, and transformed in a variety of organizational settings. The course will also examine how culture affects social interaction, decision-making, and organizational effectiveness, and provide students with opportunities to use theories and concepts learned in the course to investigate empirical cases, including organizations to which students themselves belong. The course will provide students with a foundational understanding of organizational culture and its importance in organizational success.

Intended Audience:

Organizational Studies Students as well as juniors/seniors who are interested in Organizational Theory

Class Format:

1.5-hour lecture twice weekly
