Second-Year Portuguese is designed to integrate and expand on earlier learning done in Portuguese 101/102, to improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, provide insight into the literature and culture of Portuguese-speaking people while preparing students to hypothesize, and formulate opinions on current issues, through content-based themes and tasks. Providing students with the opportunity to further develop themselves into active, confident, thinking language users.

Objective

To further develop and refine students' understanding, speaking, reading and writing skills, while furthering their insight into the literature and culture of the Portuguese-speaking people, to increase students’ proficiency in the language and to heighten their cross-cultural awareness; to provide students with strategies that allow them to communicate and read more effectively; develop awareness of Lusophone world cultures in the three continents, and to discover both similarities and differences between the way Portuguese-speaking people live, think, and express themselves as compared to the way our students live, think, and express themselves. Preparing them to formulate opinions on current issues, through content-based themes and tasks, intended to help students transform themselves into active, thinking language users, functioning at an Intermediate Low-Mid proficiency level in all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture) and develop communicative functions that will allow effective interpersonal, intercultural interaction.

Outcome

It’s expected that students completing 231 will be able to understand phrases in a variety of basic personal and social contexts, function at an Intermediate Low-Mid proficiency level in all skill areas and develop communicative functions that will allow effective interaction and communication.
