Psychology is the study of the mind that is our common and unique inheritance as human beings. It is an exciting field, where our understanding of ourselves is constantly examined, challenged, and extended.

The goals of this course are:

  • to introduce you to scientific models of human thought, feeling, and behavior
  • to apply these models to understand better your own mind and behavior and those of others
  • to develop intermediate-level academic skills

Major topics include:

  • the origins of mind, neurons and what they do
  • how we adapt to the world around us
  • how we remember (and why we sometimes misremember)
  • how we think
  • why we have feelings
  • how we are influenced by others
  • how the mind can break down
  • how we can help ourselves

Academic skills include the abilities to follow an editorial style (APA 6), to write an informative synopsis of a research article, to conduct effective library research online, and to identify and articulate psychological explanations.
